Cutscene Analysis

The cutscene I chose to analyze is from the game League of Legends which I discussed in an earlier blog post. Riot released the following cinematic, "A Twist of Fate." at the start of the 3rd season to increase public interest and to showcase some of the graphical updates for the game. The scene depicts a battle between a few different heroes from the game, namely Twisted Fate, a card throwing rogue, Fiddlesticks, a demonic scarecrow, and Garen, a stalwart knight. Graphically the cutscene is stunning, in opposition to the rather lackluster graphical capabilities of the game itself, as LoL is known to be able to be played on basically anything with a graphics card.

The soundtrack and sound effects for the scene however are very nice as well. You can tell Riot didn't take the easy path and use existing sound effects from the game; the whole scene was scored exclusively. I particularly like the sounds they engineered for the crowstorm ability Fiddlesticks uses near the beginning, and the grunts and groans from the warriors. Those effects in addition the unique score lends to the epic feel of the battle. All in all I really enjoyed this cutscene when it was released, and now watching it with a particular focus on sound I realize why I liked it so much in the first place.
